Montrose, CO is located on the western slopes about 55 miles west of the Blue Mesa Reservoir. J & D Outfitters has exclusive caretaker and hunting rights to over 20,000 acres of private ranches in GMU # 64, 65 and 70, some of which border the Black Canyon National Park. We continue to procure additional private ranches in the area in an effort to bring about ample opportunities for our clients from drop camps to fully guided hunts. As seen with our results, our elk and deer populations continue to grow in leaps and bounds, while Montrose County continues to be one of the top counties for producing trophy quality bucks. These ranches will provide excellent harvest opportunities for elk, mule deer, and bear.
Our lodging in Montrose consists
of an approximately 2,000 square foot lodge and 2 separate motel
type suite cabins equipped with private bedrooms and private bathrooms
with hot showers. All lodging is equipped with electricity and
hot running water. Every morning the hunt will begin when you step
out the front door of the cabin, which is located in the heart
of the hunting area. Meat processing and taxidermy shops are located
approximately 45 minutes away. For those who are successful early
in their hunts, there are fishing, skiing, and Black Canyon sightseeing
opportunities nearby.

Hunting Tactics... We will
offer limited archery, muzzleloader and rifle hunts for elk, deer,
and bear hunts on these ranches.
Tactics used during all seasons
consist of cow talk, bugling, spot and stalk, glassing and tree-stand
or ground blind hunting. We base our tactics on the temperature,
elk movements and amount of snowfall. This limited amount of hunting
pressure and harvest, along with proper wildlife management techniques,
will allow you excellent harvest opportunities on trophy bull elk,
deer and bear.
These ranches offer ideal habitat
for all species. The habitat on approximately 1/3 of the ranches
consist of pinion pines, junipers, alfalfa fields and oak country.
The ranches consist of deep valleys and gulches, rocky ridges,
lush green meadows surrounded by aspen ridges, large patches of
dark timber, and stocked trout ponds. The elevation on the ranches
range from 7,800 to about 11,000 feet. Transportation used during
your hunt will be 4-wheel drive trucks
to get you to and from the hot spots of the day.

Climate...
The weather in the Rocky Mountains may change very quickly. Hunters
should come prepared for both warm and cold weather. In general,
September temperatures are mild and comfortable with little chance
of snow.
On the other hand, October temperatures average around 35-40
degrees during the day and November temperatures around 15-20 degrees.
Snow is probable in both October and November.
